The Lotus in Ancient Egypt

Along the Nile, the blue lotus—more precisely the Egyptian blue water lily (Nymphaea caerulea)—became one of ancient Egypt's most recognizable flowers.

Because its blossoms open with daylight, the flower became associated with the sun, renewal, regeneration and rebirth. Lotus imagery appears throughout ancient Egyptian art, including tomb paintings, jewellery, vessels and architectural decoration.

The flower was also connected with ancient Egyptian creation traditions: from the primordial waters, the lotus emerges and opens toward the light.
